Unprecedented Humanitarian Crisis Grips Gaza
Dire Warning from UNRWA
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached an unprecedented level, with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) issuing a dire warning. As the largest humanitarian provider in Gaza, UNRWA has stated that without immediate authorization of fuel into the region, all operations will come to a halt tonight.
Critical Shortages in Healthcare
Hospitals in Gaza are on the brink of collapse, facing severe shortages of fuel, water, medical supplies, and staff. With fuel rationed and limited to essential facilities, backup generators are failing under continuous operation, exacerbating the crisis. UN personnel visiting hospitals have reported horrifying scenes of numerous wounded individuals, including men, women, and children, lacking adequate medical care. The situation is dire, with makeshift morgues overflowing due to the high number of casualties.
Looming Food Crisis
The scarcity of food supplies in Gaza is alarming, with the World Food Programme estimating that current stocks will last only about 12 days. Additionally, local stores are expected to run out of provisions in just five days, further exacerbating the crisis. With limited access to basic necessities, the population is facing starvation and malnutrition.
Health Hazards and Disease Outbreaks
As resources dwindle, Gazans are resorting to unsafe water sources, posing immediate health risks due to high salt content. Poor sanitation conditions have led to outbreaks of diseases such as chickenpox, scabies, and diarrhea. The lack of clean water and proper sanitation facilities has created a breeding ground for illness, further straining an already overwhelmed healthcare system.
Displacement and Disability
The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Gaza has soared to over 1.4 million, with nearly 590,000 seeking refuge in UNRWA-designated shelters. Alarmingly, more than 15% of these displaced individuals are estimated to have disabilities, yet shelters are ill-equipped to meet their needs. The destruction of over 40% of housing units in the Gaza Strip has left thousands homeless and vulnerable to the harsh realities of displacement.
Escalating Violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Humanitarian Crisis in North Kivu Province
Meanwhile, violence continues to escalate in North Kivu Province, located in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Recent attacks by armed groups in the town of Oicha, Beni territory, have resulted in the deaths of at least 25 civilians and injuries to numerous others. Over 1,500 people have been displaced as a result of the violence, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
Disruption of Humanitarian Aid
The ongoing violence has disrupted the distribution of essential food aid intended for over 25,000 displaced persons and vulnerable individuals across North Kivu Province. Humanitarian activities in affected areas have been suspended, and aid workers have been forced to withdraw temporarily for their safety.
Massive Displacement and Urgent Response
Since early October, nearly 200,000 people have been displaced in North Kivu, particularly in Masisi and Rutshuru territories. Despite the volatile environment, humanitarian organizations remain committed to scaling up their response efforts. Recent initiatives have seen the distribution of food aid to 140,000 displaced persons in Masisi territory alone, highlighting the urgent need for continued support in the face of escalating violence.
